ORGANISATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Knowledge Area: Strategy and decision making. Motivation

Of all the competencies and skills that are learned and taught, leadership has remained the most elusive and difficult to frame and define. This comprehensive module explores the concept of leadership from all possible angles without glossing over its complexity. It guides the learner through three sections: an Introduction to Leadership, a look at Personal Leadership and an Integrated Leadership Framework.

This first section defines and explains leadership and the difference between management and leadership, while discussing the various approaches to leadership (the Trait, power and influence, behavioural, situational and transformational approaches). The section on Personal Leadership identifies the five dimensions of being and introduces concepts such as personal mastery and systems thinking. The user is forced to answer questions such as “who am I?” and “what is my purpose?” In Integrated Leadership Framework the four quadrants constituting organizational leadership (strategic, operational, interpersonal and intra-personal) are explored with reference to the learner’s self-assessment questionnaire.

The section emphasizes the learner’s need to balance the aspects of these quadrants in order to become an effective leader. This module gives a strong theoretical grounding for methods of leadership to be explored in practice.
